About Adobe After Effects

Adobe After Effects CC 2026 (version 26.5) is Adobe's motion graphics and compositing software for Windows. You can download After Effects for Windows as a trial from Adobe's own site and keep using it with a Creative Cloud subscription.

Overview

After Effects has been around since January 1993, and over three decades it has become the program many video editors open when a shot needs more than a cut: animated titles, logo reveals, lower thirds, visual effects, keying and the kind of layered compositing where footage, graphics and text are combined into one frame. It is not a video editor in the usual sense. Longer edits are usually assembled elsewhere, and After Effects handles the short, detailed pieces that need to move precisely. Work is organised in compositions built from layers, and each property of a layer can be animated over time with keyframes. Wikidata classes it as animation software used for visual effects and 3D animation, and that is a fair summary of where it sits: between a graphics program and an editor. The interface is available in several languages, including English, French, Korean and Chinese. Because the program is aimed at professionals, the learning curve is real, but the amount of tutorials and templates made for it is huge, which helps newcomers get started.

Key facts

  • Developer: Adobe Inc.
  • Platforms: Windows and macOS
  • Licence: proprietary, subscription
  • Written in: C++
  • First released: January 1993

How to install it

  1. Open the official free trial page and sign in with an Adobe account, or create one.
  2. Run the Creative Cloud installer that Adobe gives you; it downloads After Effects and keeps it updated.
  3. Start the trial or choose a plan when the app asks for it.
  4. Check the release notes to see what changed in the version you received.

System requirements

Adobe publishes the current requirements on its website, and they change with each major release, so check them before buying. In practice, After Effects rewards a fast processor, plenty of memory and a capable graphics card: previews and renders are where a weak PC is felt first. A fast drive for the cache also makes a clear difference in daily work.

Price and licence

After Effects is paid software. Adobe sells it through Creative Cloud, either as a single app or as part of a bundle with other Adobe programs, and offers a free trial for new users. There is no perpetual licence for the current versions, so if the subscription ends, the app stops working for editing.

Is it safe?

Install After Effects only through Adobe's site and the Creative Cloud app. Cracked copies and patched installers passed around online are a common source of malware and often break with updates.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: industry standard for motion graphics, so skills and templates transfer easily.
  • Pro: works closely with other Adobe apps.
  • Pro: large community and many tutorials.
  • Con: subscription only.
  • Con: demanding on hardware.
  • Con: steep learning curve for beginners.

Alternatives

For other graphics and image tools on Windows, our site lists Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, GIMP, CorelDraw and Microsoft Designer. They cover still images and design rather than animation, so for motion work After Effects remains the main option from this list.
